Best Lawn Mowers For Women UK: November 2024

Are you a woman looking for the best lawn mower that’s easy to use and does a great job of cutting your grass?

As a woman myself, I know that many lawn mowers have designs that are biased towards men, with long handles that can’t be shortened down to a woman’s height, and heavy, bulky frames that are a struggle for the average woman to manoeuvre.

Here, I’ve shared the most capable mowers that can be used by women and men alike, so whether you’re solely responsible for mowing your lawn or you want to split the job with a male member of your household, you’ll find what you’re looking for here.

⭐ Reviews – Best Lawn Mowers For Women of 2024

In my opinion, the Bosch Rotak 34R Electric Lawnmower is the best overall lawn mower for women and the best corded electric lawn mower for medium-sized lawns.

There are a few features of this mower that make it ideal for women: it’s lightweight and easy to push at just 11.1 kilograms, it has an ergonomic adjustable handle with a low enough minimum height for people who measure around 5ft 2 tall, and it’s a corded electric model, so you don’t have to mess about with a starter cord or charge a battery – simply plug the mower in and press “start”.

Quick Specs:

  • Brand: Bosch

  • Price: £

  • Power source: Electric corded

  • Cutting width: 34cm

  • Cut height range: 20-70mm

  • Weight: 11.1 kilograms

  • Grass box capacity: 40 litres

  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 61.6 x 37.8 x 40.2cm

  • Power: 1300 W

Best For:

Anyone looking for the best value lawn mower for women that’s lightweight and easy to assemble and use, and has all the essential features to help you mow a small-to-medium lawn quickly.

What Customers Think:

The Bosch Rotak 34R is one of the most popular lawn mowers for domestic use today, and (at the time of writing) has more positive reviews than any of its competitors on Amazon. I found women reviewers who said that the mower’s 11-kilogram design made it easy to lift, its assembly was easy (taking just 15 minutes), and that the ease of cutting even longer grass prevents mowing from being “a horrible chore”.

Pros:

  • There are so many features that I love about this mower for women. It doesn’t have a heavy battery or petrol engine, so it’s lightweight and easy to carry from storage, and the powerful 1,300-watt motor means it handles even long, thick grass with ease, so you won’t put your back out if you’ve left it too long between mows.

  • The large 40-litre grass box is another great feature. It holds more grass clippings and reduces the frequency of empties, so you can spend more time mowing and less time doing the awkward lift-and-tip at your compost heap.

  • Adjusting the cut height (from 20-70mm) is also easy and can be done with one hand – much better than having to partially disassemble the mower, as is the case with the older conventional models.

  • Plus, you can mow quickly and in fewer laps thanks to the 34cm cutting width, and the ergonomic handles are adjustable, so you can lower the height until the handle sits comfortably at waist height.

Cons:

  • The grass box has a flimsy feel.

  • The electric cord is only 10 metres. While this is about average for an electric lawn mower, you’ll need to use an extension cord when cutting medium-sized lawns.

Only mowing a small space? Then you can’t go wrong with the Flymo EasiMow 300R Electric Rotary Lawn Mower – my top pick for the best lightweight, female-friendly lawn mower for smaller lawns.

This mower has a narrower 30cm cutting width and a smaller 30-litre grass box, so it’s not as bulky as the Bosch model, and weighs just 8.4 kilograms. It’s easy to put together, has an adjustable handle that can be made shorter for women, and boasts a powerful 1,000-watt engine that helps you to mow thick or tall grass with little resistance.

Quick Specs:

  • Brand: Flymo

  • Price: £

  • Power source: Electric corded

  • Cutting width: 30cm

  • Cut height range: 20-60mm

  • Weight: 8.4 kilograms

  • Grass box capacity: 30 litres

  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 101 x 37.6 x 96.5cm

  • Power: 1000 W

Best For:

Female gardeners with a smaller lawn who want a narrow, nifty electric lawn mower that’s equally lightweight and powerful enough to mow a variety of terrains with ease.

What Customers Think:

Customers have lots of positive things to say about the Flymo EasiMow 300R Electric Rotary Lawn Mower, awarding it an average 4.3-star rating from more than 4,500 reviews. The women reviewers said that the mower is easy to assemble, lightweight, and powerful enough to get the job done. I found a couple of reviewers in their seventies who said that the mower’s lightweight design makes it particularly easy to use for older women.

Pros:

  • I think this mower is ideally designed for women who have a small garden to mow. It’s narrow enough to get into tight spots with its 30cm cutting width, and it isn’t too heavy or bulky, so you won’t struggle to maneuver it in a smaller space.

  • The adjustable handle is also an essential feature for women (one reviewer said she was 4ft 11 and could comfortably mow with this model).

  • The 1,000-watt motor is powerful enough to handle most cutting situations in a smaller lawn, but it’s not as loud or as powerful as some of the larger mowers, so you can enjoy quieter operation with less vibration.

  • It’s also great to see that this Flymo model is easy to assemble and comes with a user manual that has clear step-by-step instructions – a rarity in the lawn mower industry!

Cons:

  • Adjusting the cut height (from 20-60mm) may be a challenge for some women, and you have to separately adjust the front and the rear wheels, which is a hassle.

  • The mower has a lot of plastic parts, which makes me question its durability.

Manual mowers have an obvious advantage for women: they’re not weighed down by a heavy motor or battery, which makes them smaller, lighter, and easy to carry and store.

The Bosch AHM 38 G Manual Garden Lawn Mower is my top recommended pick for women who are specifically looking for a manual mower, either for a smaller lawn, an allotment, or another small space with relatively flat, even ground. This mower takes just minutes to set up and is easy to use, with an ergonomic handle that reduces neck and shoulder strain. Plus, it comes with a 25-litre grass box – that’s big according to manual mower standards – so you can spend more time mowing and less time emptying.

Quick Specs:

  • Brand: Bosch

  • Price: £

  • Power source: Manual

  • Cutting width: 38cm

  • Cut height range: 15-43mm

  • Weight: 6.9 kilograms

  • Grass box capacity: 25 litres

  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 54 x 49 x 38cm

  • Power: N/A

Best For:

Anyone who wants a lightweight, no-hassle mower that can be used anywhere to quickly mow smaller spaces.

What Customers Think:

The Bosch AHM is one of the most popular manual mowers on Amazon, with 4.1 stars from more than 3,000 reviews. Again, I focused on what women users had to say about this mower. A woman in her sixties said that the mower “requires a bit of effort” but helps her stay fit, gives a good cut, and has “no horrible cord to wrestle”. Another reviewer said that she recommends the mower for women, adding that it has a sturdy design and is easy to carry.

Pros:

  • For a woman, I think there are lots of benefits to this Bosch manual mower. The mower is lighter and easier to carry due to its simple motor-free and battery-free design, and the handle is 4 feet tall, so it should sit comfortably at abdominal level when pushed at an angle, depending on your height.

  • The lack of the motor and the fact that this mower is person powered makes it safer and easier to control. You don’t have the vibration of an electric or petrol-powered mower to contend with, and you can quickly stop the blades from spinning by simply bringing the mower to a halt.

  • I think a big selling point of manual mowers like the Bosch AHM 38 G is that they can be used to mow any green space without being tethered by a cord. You could easily take this mower to an allotment or a garden across the road without the logistics of accessing electricity or the extra bulk of a petrol mower.

  • The 25-litre grass box capacity reduces your trips to the garden waste bin, and anyone who loves the look of a “bowling green” type lawn will appreciate that the cut height can be adjusted as low as 15mm.

Cons:

  • The Bosch AHM 38 G might be super lightweight, but it takes more pushing effort, so it’s not the best choice if you’re an elderly woman or you have mobility restrictions.

  • Because there’s more resistance when manual mowing, you’ll need to mow your lawn more often (once or twice per week) during the grass growing season to prevent the grass from getting too long to cut easily.

If you’ve got a big lawn to mow and you need a powerful mower that’s easy enough for a woman to operate, I recommend the Hyundai 17″/42cm 139cc Electric-Start Self-Propelled Petrol Lawnmower.

This lawn mower is the best petrol lawn mower I’ve reviewed, with a whole host of features that make it ideal for use by both women and men. The petrol engine and wide 42cm cutting width enable you to mow much faster than with an electric mower, and the self-propelled drive means you simply have to hold the handles and steer, no pushing required. Plus, the mower has an electric start, so you don’t have the hassle of cranking a starter cord.

Quick Specs:

  • Brand: Hyundai

  • Price: ££

  • Power source: Petrol

  • Cutting width: 42cm

  • Cut height range: 25-75mm

  • Weight: 31 kilograms

  • Grass box capacity: 45 litres

  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 103cm x 50cm x 135cm

  • Engine power: 139cc

Best For:

Women who want the best petrol lawn mower that will cut their lawn quickly without the bulky, heavy design or difficult operation of a traditional petrol mower.

What Customers Think:

The Hyundai 17″/42cm 139cc Electric-Start Self-Propelled Petrol Lawnmower has a 4.4-star rating from more than 350 reviewers on Amazon. I found reviews from female users who said that the mower is easy to maneuver and cuts grass well, and is easy to install (even for somebody with little DIY knowledge) thanks to the simple instructions.

Pros:

  • There are a few unique features of this mower that make it particularly well-suited for women. It has a push-button electric start, so you can get going straight away and don’t have to struggle with a pull cord. Plus, it’s self-propelled, so when you push down on the lever, the mower will move forward – all you have to do is steer.

  • Petrol mowers can be tricky to assemble, but this Hyundai model is refreshingly easy to set up. You can’t adjust the handle height, but its set position is quite low so it’s naturally better suited to women.

  • If you want to mow a medium-to-large lawn as quickly as possible, this mower delivers. The 139cc engine provides plenty of power for mowing long and thick grass, and you can quickly cover ground with the mower’s wide 43cm cutting width.

  • Not everyone wants the hassle of emptying the grass box. You can use the built-in mulching function if you prefer to feed your lawn with grass clippings and avoid having to frequently stop and empty.

Cons:

  • Despite its electric start and self-propulsion, this Hyundai mower is still heavy at 31 kilograms, so as a woman, you’ll find it difficult to lift or carry.

  • It’s a shame that you can’t control the speed of the self-propulsion. The set speed might be too fast for some users.

Based on my research, I recommend the Einhell GE-EM 1032 Electric Lawnmower as the best female-friendly lawn mower for folks with small budgets.

This electric lawn mower costs around one-third of its competitors and proves that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy all the features you need in a lawn mower for women, like a sturdy-yet-lightweight 9.2-kilogram design, and a height-adjustable handle that you can tailor to your comfortable mowing height. The mower’s 32cm cutting width and 30-litre grass box make it best suited to lawns on the smaller side.

Quick Specs:

  • Brand: Einhell

  • Price: £

  • Power source: Electric corded

  • Cutting width: 32cm

  • Cut height range: 20-60mm

  • Weight: 9.2 kilograms

  • Grass box capacity: 30 litres

  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 42.9 x 15.8 x 37cm

  • Power: 1000 W

Best For:

Female gardeners with tight budgets who want an affordable lawn mower that has all the essential features and doesn’t compromise on performance quality or durability.

What Customers Think:

The Einhell GE-EM 1032 Electric Lawnmower is another popular choice on Amazon, with an average 4.3-star rating. I found a few reviews by women who said that the mower is lightweight and sturdy, easy to use and empty, and quick to assemble. Reviewers agreed that the mower is great value for money.

Pros:

  • The obvious benefit of this lawn mower is its price. It costs less than £70 (at the time of reviewing – prices tend to fluctuate throughout the year), but offers all the features of a mower around the £100 mark, including a powerful 1,000-watt brushless motor that can handle all terrains, and three cut heights for achieving your preferred end result.

  • There are a few features that make this lawn mower a good option for women. Thanks to its slightly smaller grass box and motor, it’s lightweight, at just over 9 kilograms, and it has a narrow 32cm cutting width – so it’s easy to maneuver, even if you don’t consider yourself the strongest person.

  • I’m also pleased to see a few other features that make this mower easy to use, like the height-adjustable handle for comfortable mowing regardless of how tall you are, and the grass box fill-level indicator that takes the guesswork out of empties.

Cons:

  • The 32cm cutting width is quite narrow compared to other electric mowers, so I don’t recommend using this mower on medium or large lawns – a larger mower will be quicker and more efficient.

  • Adjusting the cutting height is a faff because you have to remove all four wheels to do so. I wish the mower had an easy height adjustment lever like most other electric lawn mowers.

4.5/5

If you’d rather not put any effort at all into mowing your lawn, I recommend the Flymo EasiLife 150 GO Robotic Lawn Mower as the best robot lawn mower for female gardeners.

This mower is available in 7 different sizes for cutting areas up to 800m², and it’s much better value than its competitors, costing around £100 less while still offering all the best features: Bluetooth app connectivity, safety sensors, and simple programming. It’s the best choice if you want an autonomous mower that you can set and forget – a complete luxury if you can’t stand manual lawn mowing.

Quick Specs:

  • Brand: Flymo

  • Price: £££

  • Power source: Electric (battery-operated)

  • Cutting width: 16cm

  • Cut height range: 20-50mm

  • Weight: 7.3 kilograms

  • Grass box capacity: N/A

  • Dimensions (DxWxH): 54 x 49 x 38cm

  • Power: 18V Lithium-Ion battery

Best For:

Any women (or men!) who hate lawn mowing or would prefer to do something else with their time and can stretch their budgets to the best, most popular robot lawn mower on the market today.

What Customers Think:

The Flymo EasiLife 150 GO has a 4.2-star rating from more than 1,500 reviewers. Customers praised the mower for its easy setup and completely independent operation (once you’ve set it, it’ll mow to its own schedule). I found one reviewer who said they were a disabled woman and had been able to save hundreds of pounds per year on gardeners by buying this Flymo mower.

Pros:

  • I think the obvious standout feature of this Flymo mower is its ability to mow entirely independently. Whether you don’t have the time in your busy schedule to mow your lawn, you don’t enjoy the job, or you have mobility issues, you can sit back and let the EasiLife GO get on with mowing for you.

  • You can use the mower on lawns as big as 800m², so it’s not a solution for small spaces only. Just click through the different size options depending on the size of your cutting area.

  • You never have to stress about long or overgrown grass again – the EasiLife GO makes an appearance every 2-3 days to cut grass, depending on the season.

  • Not all robot mowers are cable of mowing bumpy, unusually-shaped, or steep lawns, but this Flymo model can do it all. It’s designed to safely mow lawns with an incline of up to 25% and (providing the perimeter wire is placed correctly) can thoroughly mow lawns of any shape.

Cons:

  • Setting up the boundary wire takes time. A few customers said that burying the wire a couple of centimetres underground works best, but this requires extra effort.

  • Although the EasiLife Go is better-value than other robot mowers, it’s still expensive. Even the smallest mower for 150m² costs around £400.

📝 6 Features To Look For In A Lawn Mower For Women

When you’re shopping for the best lawn mower for yourself or a female family member, look for the following features:

📏 Handle Height & Adjustment

The average height of a woman in the UK is 5 ft 3, while the average height of a man is 5 ft 9. That’s quite a difference – and unfortunately, many of the lawn mowers I’ve reviewed in my time writing for The Turf Doctor have fixed handle heights that are biased towards the taller man.

When selecting the lawn mowers for this guide, I looked specifically for mowers with an adjustable handle height (so you can make the handle lower or higher to allow for comfortable mowing regardless of how tall you are), or mowers with a fixed handle that sits at around stomach or abdominal level on the average woman.

Mowing with a handle that’s too high may cause strain on your neck and shoulders, and could even pose a safety risk – so make sure you choose a mower with a lower or adjustable handle, especially if you’re a shorter woman.

And on the subject of lawn mower handles, I also recommend prioritizing a mower with an ergonomic handle, which will further reduce the risk of injury and allow for more comfortable mowing.

🏋🏻‍♀️ Lightweight Design

Another important feature of the best lawn mowers for women is a lightweight design.

I’d like to point out that women certainly aren’t weak, but unfortunately, when it comes to pushing or lifting very heavy items, we do have our limitations.

Men are larger and stronger than women, with an estimated 33% more lower-body strength and 40% more upper-body strength.

So, while your husband, brother, or dad might be able to lug around a heavy petrol mower with relative ease, you may find it too tiring to use yourself.

I recommend looking for a lawn mower that weighs around 11 kilograms or less to avoid over-exertion from pushing the mower.

There are some electric lawn mowers that weigh as little as 6-8 kilograms, and manual mowers that weigh even less than this.

carrying, mower, by, handle,

🚧 Low Vibration

The vibration produced by a lawn mower is typically determined by the quality of the blade and the size and build of the motor/engine.

The more vibration a mower has, the more difficult it’ll be to control. As a woman, you need to look for a lawn mower that’s the easiest to handle, so the lower the mower’s vibration, the better.

It’s not always easy to know the amount of vibration to expect from a lawn mower, but most modern lawn mowers have a sturdy, quality build and should keep vibration to a minimum.

If you start a new mower and it’s vibrating badly, check that the blade is level before you start mowing.

🧰 Easy Assembly

Women are just as capable as men when it comes to DIY – but that’s not to say that you want to spend hours putting together a mower following illegible instructions when you could choose a mower that comes together in just a few easy clicks.

When choosing the best lawn mowers for women in this guide, I’ve focused on the mowers that are easy to install, with just a few steps in the process, and with easy-follow user manuals (which isn’t always the case in the lawn mower industry).

If DIY isn’t your strong point, look for a mower that can be assemble in 15 minutes or less. Check customer reviews – if a mower is easy to assemble, you’ll read comments like: “I’m not a handy person but was able to assemble the mower myself”.

folded, lawn, mower, portable,

🏁 Easy Start Features

If you have a large garden and you’re specifically looking for a powerful petrol mower, I recommend opting for a mower with an easy start.

Conventional petrol lawn mowers have a starter cord that you have to crank a few times before the engine kicks in. This cord is usually unnecessarily difficult to pull and might prove too much of a challenge for you – especially if you have a very old petrol mower.

The good news is that many modern petrol mowers have an electric start feature, which means you can start the mower with the press of a button or the turn of a key (just like with modern cars!).

This feature saves you the hassle of cranking a cord and means you can start mowing straight away.

💪 Self Propulsion

Another essential feature of petrol lawn mowers for women is self-propulsion.

Especially if you have a large lawn, pushing a heavy petrol mower will tire you out quickly, making mowing your lawn more of a workout than it needs to be.

Using a mower with no self-propulsion may also pose an operation risk, since pushing a heavy petrol mower up and down hills may cause you to lose control.

A self-propelled lawn mower is much safer and easier for a woman because it uses a motor to drive its wheels forward, so you don’t have to put in the pushing effort. All you have to do is walk behind the mower and hold onto the handles.

You’ll need to spend a little extra on a self-propelled lawn mower, but in my opinion, the hassle you’ll save over the years of using the mower makes it totally worth it.

🧾 7 Things To Consider When Choosing The Best Lawn Mower For Women

Aside from all the features we’ve listed above, here are the things you should consider when you’re shopping for a lawn mower for women:

💰 Your Budget

Start by determining how much money you have to spend on a lawn mower. The average price range of a new lawn mower is £70-£500.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on a mower – it just depends on what you’re looking for.

Electric mowers and manual reel mowers are the best budget-friendly options, while battery-powered mowers are more expensive (due to their cordless design), and petrol mowers are even pricier. Robot mowers are the most expensive lawn mowers available for domestic use.

Decide on the best lawn mower within your budget for your lawn size and mowing preferences.

🟩📐 Your Lawn Size/Mower Cutting Width

Also consider your lawn size, and the most suitable lawn mower cutting width for the job.

A mower’s cutting width is the width of the cutting deck, which determines how much ground the mower covers with each lap.

The bigger your lawn, the more you’ll benefit from a mower with a wider cutting width.

Smaller lawns will do fine with a corded lawn mower that has a 30cm-34cm cutting width. A narrow cutting deck is advantageous in this situation because it means the mower is easier to manoeuvre in gardens with limited turning space and can get into tight nooks and crannies.

If your lawn is medium-sized, look for a mower with a 34cm-40cm cutting width, which will speed up your mowing time by covering more space with every run, but won’t be too bulky or weighty.

Large lawns benefit from a wider mower with a 40cm-51cm+ cutting width, since your priority is to cut grass as efficiently as possible, and you’re less likely to have tight spots or limited turning room.

corded, lawn, mower,

8️⃣ Number Of Cut Heights

Modern lawn mowers all have adjustable cut heights, so you can adjust the height of the blade depending on your starting grass height.

I recommend looking for a lawn mower that has at least three cut height options, so you can easily cut your lawn even if you’ve let the grass grow long.

Some of the best lawn mowers on this list have five cut heights, typically ranging from 20mm to 75mm.

Choose a lower cut height if you mow your lawn regularly and prefer the look of a closely-cropped lawn. Start with a higher cut height if your lawn is overgrown and you need to cut it down gradually without damaging the grass.

🛠 Maintenance Preferences

As with installation and assembly, women are just as capable as men when it comes to mower maintenance.

But again, you can probably think of better ways to spend a Sunday morning than servicing a lawn mower.

If you want to keep maintenance to a minimum, I recommend looking at a corded lawn mower or a cordless lawn mower.

A corded electric lawn mower requires the least maintenance of all mower types. It has a sturdy rotary blade that needs sharpening just once or twice per mowing season, and it doesn’t need any fuel or oil top-ups.

Battery-powered lawn mowers are also low-maintenance, but you’ll need to remember to charge the battery before every use.

A manual mower is easy to maintain, but it has cylinder blades that need sharpening and replacing more frequently.

Petrol lawn mowers require the most maintenance. Make sure you’re prepared for fuel top-ups, oil changes, and all the other petrol mower maintenance jobs before you spend your money.

👷🏻‍♀️ Safety Features

When using a large, heavy machine like a lawn mower, it’s reassuring to know that there are safety features in place to protect you if you slip, fall, or lose control of the mower.

Look for a lawn mower that has a safety lever, which will cause the mower to shut off if you let go of the handle while mowing.

Also make sure the mower has a back flap to prevent objects (including your feet!) from coming into contact with the spinning blades.

✂️ Cutting Options

Most lawn mowers today come with a grass bag or a grass box, allowing you to collect the clippings as you mow.

A few of the best lawn mowers, particularly petrol mowers, allow you to choose between multiple cutting options, including collection, rear or side discharge, and mulching.

Mulching is a particularly appealing feature because it cuts grass up small and leaves the pieces on your lawn, so you don’t have the extra job of emptying the collection box as you mow.

📢 Customer Feedback & Warranty

Finally, make sure to read customer feedback and look for a warranty before you spend your money on a lawn mower.

A manufacturer will do everything they can to make their product sound perfect, but customer reviews give you an insight into the reality of owning the mower.

You could end up changing your mind on what might have seemed like a great lawn mower if the customer reviews are largely unfavorable.

Of course, reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt, but if lots of customers all have the same negative thing to say, think twice about whether or not the mower is worth your money.

The right lawn mower should have a 1-year warranty, minimum. Many manufacturers offer a 2-year warranty for their products, with the option to extend the warranty to 3 years if you register the mower online (definitely make sure to take advantage of this!).
